London, England: 5,399 miles

Thanks to technology our Flat Stanley zipped around the world and back! He stopped to visit a friend in London, England and returned with some great information. Our new friend Ruby wrote about London and some personal favorites:

-The distance from London to Qingdao is 5,399 miles which is about 8,638 km.
-The capital of England is London which is located at 51° 5´ altitude and 0° longitude.
-In London, it is winter now and rains frequently. The temperature is 5.1°C ~ 10.04°C.
-Famous places in London that I visited are The British Museum, The National Gallery, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Buckingham palace, Hyde Park, Greenwich Observatory, and Royal Albert Hall. The British Museum is near my home and I often go there. Royal Albert Hall is a very big hall and a good place to enjoy listening to music. Big Ben is a big clock tower in the Parliament. The National Gallery has many pictures. Hyde Park is a very big park. Buckingham palace is the place in which Queen of England lives. Queen Elizabeth often goes to Winsor Castle which is another place of living. Tower Bridge is a big bridge of history.
-Greenwich Time is standard time of the world.
-Sports Cricket, football, Netball, Dancing
-Books The snow king, The storm castle, Hot dog (Oxford Reading tree)
-Television programs The story of Tracy Beaker, Horrid Henry, Take a bow, Arthur
-My school is St. George the Martyr CE Primary School. In my school there are 6 classes, each for six years. My class is Year 4 and called class 4 or King William IV which consists of 22 students.

West Mansfield, OH, USA: 6,952.4 miles

Some of our Flat Stanleys had a lay over in West Mansfield, OH, USA on their way to other parts of North America. Mrs. Anderson (Miss Anderson's mom) was kind enough to forward them along AND take pictures of their arrival and departures!

West Mansfield Post Office, it is about a 2 minute car ride from the house.

They are in another envelope ready to go meet their hosts all over America and Canada!
One lucky Stanley took the 7 minute car ride to Benjamin Logan Elementary to meet with Mrs. Smith's first grade class that will host him! We are looking forward to getting to know some boys and girls in Bellefontaine, OH as they get to know us!

A Note from Mrs. Anderson:

Dear Miss Anderson and Second Grade QMIS Class,

Your first envelope of Flat Stanleys have arrived safely in West Mansfield, OH, USA on Monday afternoon! They were placed in our door. ( see pic) They all were very shy when they were placed in the large envelopes you provided to go to their separate destinations so I didn't take any pictures.

They then made the 2 minute ride to our local post office to continue their travels.

They had to spend the night and next day there since it was Veterans Day on Tuesday and the Post Office was closed.

The Flat Stanley that was traveling to Mrs. Smith Class at Benjamin Logan Elementary School was warmly received by the secretary of the school, Mrs. Rader. She placed Flat Stanley in Mrs. Smith mailbox since she was out at a class today. But she and her class are excited about the visitor from China!

I am looking forward to following all the adventures of your Flat Stanleys!

Malaysia!

Our first Flat Stanley has returned to us with some exciting pictures! Mr. Post, our elementary principal, went to a conference in Malaysia and let Stanley tag along. They met lots of new and interesting people, read books, ate some good food and explored the area! Mr. Post showed our classes the pictures and taught us more about where they visited. It was really interesting!

Letter to Hosts

Dear Friend or Relative,

As part of our integrated Reading, Writing, Language, Social Studies, and Mathematics programs, the children in my class have read a funny book called Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. The book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished "as flat as a pancake" when a bulletin board falls on him. Stanley is very, very flat but otherwise fine. The story goes on to tell how Stanley discovers some real advantages to being flat. He can slide under doors, go down into sidewalk grates, and even fold himself up small enough to fit into an envelope and be mailed to California for an exciting vacation.

읽기, 쓰기, 사회와 산수 과목들을 통합하여 배우기 위해서 학생들은 Jeff Brown이 쓴 재밌는 책 Flat Stanley 를 읽었습니다. 이 책은 스텐리라는 남자아이에게 계시판이 떨어져 아이가 어쩔수 없이 “종이장” 처럼 납작하게 된 이야기 입니다. 스텐리는 아주 납작하게 되었지만 매우 재밌는 이야기를 담고 있습니다. 이 책은 스텐리가 납작해졌기 때문에 오히려 유리했던 경험들을 이야기 해줍니다. 스텐리는 문틈사이를 통과 할 수 있고, 배수구를 들어가 보기도 하며  접혀져서 편지봉투에 들어가 우편으로 보내져 캘리포니아에서 즐거운 여행을 보내기도 합니다.

We are sending out plain paper dolls that we call Flat Stanley, and we are sending them off to visit cities all over the WORLD. I have selected you to be Flat Stanley’s "host family" and hope that you will send him back to me after a short visit telling us (my class) something about your city and the exciting things Flat Stanley saw or did while he was there. We would also appreciate it if you could let us know approximately how far your city is from mine (Qingdao, China) so that we can calculate the number of miles Flat Stanley has traveled. Of course, Flat Stanley would also appreciate it if you could "dress" him to reflect the season you are in, or an activity that he did, or other clothing that would tell us more about where you live.

학생들은 종이 인형인 스텐리가 세계의 다른 도시들을 방문할 수 있도록 여행을 보내고 있습니다. 스텐리를 맡아주시는 동안 스텐리가 방문할 도시에 대해서 그리고 보게 될 흥미로운 이야기들을 기록해 주신후 다시 스텐리를 보내주시면 감사하겠습니다.  그리고 스텐리가 얼마큼의 거리를 여행하고 돌아 왔는지 계산할 수 있도록, 중국의 청도에서 방문한 곳까지의 거리를  알려주시기 바랍니다. 또한 스텐리에게 살고 계신 지역의 계절옷이나 특별한 활동에 입는 옷 아니면 지역을 잘 나타낼수 있는 옷을 입혀서 보내주신다면 저희들은 더욱더 감사를 드릴것입니다.
